Walking Dead Analysis

This shows an abandoned house or barn. This also shows some Flowers at the bottom left hand side of the shot. It is a long-shot to show the full mise-en-scene. The editing of the shot has made the shot unsettling, eerie and to give it an almost haunted effect. It is edited to show the skies that look almost black due to the clouds, this is effective for the series survival-horror genre due to it looking almost like the hell on earth on which the show is based on. The mise-en-scene also looks post-apocalyptic.
This shot shows zombies trying to break open a door that is chained shut and has "DONT OPEN, DEAD INSIDE" scribbled on it in a dramatic fashion. The mise-en-scene is purely just the door and the zombies hands reaching through them in an evil and satanic fashion, almost as if there one hive mind and do it in unison, making all the more disturbing and evil to the audience. The camera is at a low-angle position to emphasize that they are the dominate enemies and there is little to no hope left for the survivors. It is edited so the only things visible are the door and the zombies so the audience gets the full picture of the horror in front of them.

Overall the Walking Dead's title sequence is an excellent example of a thriller introduction sequence. This is because our audience demographics is C2, which is students. Our thriller and The Walking Dead's opening appeal's to them because they want a good drama/story plus a sinister, depression world to escape into after a hard days study. In addition, The Walking Dead's opening follows thriller conventions due to the fact it uses degraded, dark environments that give the impression that something is hiding in the shadows whilst obscuring the audiences view. Also, its use of background editing is similar to many other thriller films like Seven and Silence Of The Lambs.

BBFC

U Universal – Suitable for all.

A U film should be suitable for audiences aged four years and over, although it is impossible to predict what might upset any particular child. U films should be set within a positive framework and should offer reassuring counterbalances to any violence, threat or horror.

PG- Parental guidance.

A PG film should not unsettle a child aged around eight or older. Unaccompanied children of any age may watch, but parents are advised to consider whether the content may upset younger, or more sensitive, children.

12/12A- suitable for 12+ or under 12 with an adult.

Suitable for 12+ or under 12 with an adult. Discrimination must not be endorsed by films message. Drug use should be infrequent, and instructional details should not be given. Sexual references can be briefly portrayed, although the activity should not go beyond what is suitable for young teenagers. Moderate violence is allowed, although it should not dwell on gory details.

15- No one younger than 15 may see a 15 film in a cinema.

No one younger than 15 may rent or buy a 15 rated video work. The work as a whole must not endorse discriminatory language or behaviour, although there may be racist, homophobic or other discriminatory themes and language. Drug taking may be shown but the work as a whole must not promote or encourage drug misuse. Violence may be strong but should not dwell on the infliction of pain or injury. The strongest gory images are unlikely to be acceptable. Sexual activity may be portrayed, but usually without strong detail. There may be strong verbal references to sexual behaviour.

18- No one younger than 18 may see an 18 film in a cinema. No one younger than 18 may rent or buy an 18 rated video work. Adults should be free to choose their own entertainment. Exceptions are most likely in the following areas: where the material is in breach of the criminal law, or has been created through the commission of a criminal offence. Where material or treatment appears to us to risk harm to individuals or, through their behaviour, to society. For example, the detailed portrayal of violent or dangerous acts, or of illegal drug use.  Contains detailed explicit images.

R18- Restricted 18

They can only be shown on licenced premises or licenced shops. Usually contains material that breaches criminal law. Material that encourages sexual abuse, the infliction of pain, or any sexual threats or humiliation which isn’t clearly defined in the plot.
From what I found out in my research, thrillers usually have a high age rating from the BBFC, because of the material that is in the film. For example violence or nudity is very common in thrillers. This tells me that a wide range audience will enjoy these films more because the film is quite mature.

Production Company

The history behind Lions Gate Entertainment is that it is an American-Canadian company that was founded in 1997 in Vancouver, Canada. It is currently headquartered in Santa Monica, California in the USA. it is overall the most commercially successful mini major movie production company and as of 2013 is the seventh most profitable movie studio in the world. Since its founding in 1997, the company had produced over 200 feature length films and had gained over 5 billion dollars in profits.

I would like Lionsgate to produce our thriller because they are renowned for doing many thriller films.  Lionsgate is a leading global entertainment company with a strong presence in motion picture production and distribution, television programming and syndication, home entertainment, family entertainment, digital distribution and international distribution and sales. These means we can get our production out to a much wider range of people. Also they have shows on 20 different TV networks, making it so much easier to advertise our film.

Lionsgate have produced massively iconic films, for example The Hunger Games and Twilight and emerging young adult brands like Divergent and Ender’s Game.  These are large names for the filming industry, this tells us that they have a large about of experience. But they don’t only do thriller films they do many other genres as well. For example Kevin Hart’s Let me explain. I believe they would be very helpful in giving us pointers when we create our production.

Analysis of Preliminary

This is analysis of my preliminary task. The setting was at school this was because we didn't have enough time to go outside of school, this want very good because it wasn't typical of the thriller genre and film it because we only had an hour and the actors used were people that had no lesson at the time and were easy to find.

The Mise en-scene used in the screen shots are the lockers this sets the scene and tells the viewer that it is located in a school. The title shows what it is about and also indicates what is going to happen in the film. The sound just starts here, it is a very calm piece of music and its contracts with the story line. The editing was very simple for the start we just had to editing the title in and to also add the the affect we put of a grainy feel to it.
we used a clip effect in iMovie to create the CCTV style effect. we wanted this effect because it showed the audience a clear view of the school. also to give the sinister effect of watching someone with out them knowing.
This shot is very effective because it is a POV shot, it shows the audience what the actor/character sees, this creates tension, felling and suspension. the audience feel like they are on the film.

I like this close up of harry's face to show his expression to the audience, but the bin in the background ruins the Mise-en-scene of the shot if i did it again i would of moved the bin and may have also cropped out some of the building on the left.
This shot gives a good view of the 180 degree rule, clearly shows the two actors looking at each other.
