Sin City Time Line and Analysis

In film Sin City, the opening sequence starts with a narrative, showing a man holding a women's dead in his lap, in the street, it then pans into and extreme long shot of the city– this show the setting, also the buildings are used to spell the words sin city. The setting of a city, can be manipulated to project unsafety, as we see the city as a very large place.

The effect of red liquid or blood on to the titles, this portrays that the film will be in the action genre or horror genre. The typography  is  bold, large and  comic like and stands out well on the black and white background, this relates to the genres thriller/noir . The red may connote blood, violence or death.

The title sequence also has non diegetic music, the music used helps the audience recognise  type of movie. Overall the dark editing, which is typically used in a thriller genre gives a sense of fear or helplessness. The setting of a city, can be manipulated to project unsafety, as we see the city as a very large place.

Foundation Media Preliminary and analysis

During the task we used range of shots  to show the audience what was happening throughout the scene and we tried to keep the continuity editing correct, we had person running through a door and in another shot we made sure he would come from the same place in which he entered from. But not all of our continuity was correct as in one of the key shots the "crazy people" switch sides, this made the film look unprofessional, if I was too film again I would change this.

At the beginning of the scene there was a close up and a tracking shot which was aimed out protagonist's or the main characters feet running, giving the audience understanding of what the actor is doing and it also creates a sense of tension or suspense, making the audience wonder what is happening There was another use of a mid-shot when we see the actor pushing open the door implying that he trying to get away from something or he is going somewhere significant.

However, when filming the CCTV style shots, the camera was not smooth this made the shot look unsteady, so if we were to film it again we would use an the tri-pod in a more professional manner so that movement would be smooth/steady and not shaky.

Editing was used effectively through the use of straight cuts and fade to blacks. For example, when the actor runs through the door it fades to black, this suggest time passing or change of location, when it faded back in you see the "crazy people"'s feet.

However, when we filmed we didn't use a 180 degree side shot which we should have used, but we did use an other the shoulder shot to represent the 180 degree rule. so if we were to film it again, the side shot would be added. If it was added it would give the audience the sense of clearer communication between the two actors.

The non-diegetic sound creates suspense. we used a piece of music, which doesn't really go with the thriller genre to create even more suspense. The sound not matching makes the audience like this is a dream/nightmare, making it surreal. The digetic sound also creates suspense and thrill, the sound of creaking door is typical of the thriller genre

I have learnt some new technical skills, I now know where to position the camera , changing shot type and finding out some new short cuts for Imovie. When filming again the camera skills need to be improved. This will be done by, making the camera work smoother, using other equipment to get a better range of shots. when filming the CCTV we could of used the equipment a lot better by using it properly and putting the legs out properly.

When we were planning the preliminary, the group had good organisation skills but when it came to filming we could of been a lot more organised. we should of got the shots that we needed before the smaller, less important shots. we did rush a couple key shots, causing us to make mistakes and continuity errors.

One of strength to the clip is the different range of shot types, this shows how the shots can be more effective on the audience, for example when the "crazy people" are running towards the camera, the editing of slow motion builds tension as it cause the elements of the shot to stand out.

Another strength is that there was only a small part of dialogue, this makes the scene simpler and doesn't fill the clip with boring and off topic dialogue. If I was going to film it again I would make it a lot clearer, by changing the lighting effect, the audience feedback said they couldn't tell between the CCTV and the normal lighting. also would have taken my time more.

Angels and Demons Soundtrack Analysis

The sound is all non-diegetic because it is music. Also we cant tell if it synchronous because it is only the audio of the theme and not the opening clip, but from the way the music is played I think that it is synchronous.

Snatch opening title/Pacific rim opening scene

Pacific Rim Opening Scene

The opening scene starts with a piece of text, its typography and colour suggest that it is an old-fashion computer. Then a voice over starts, the voice is a male begins to talk about the stars and he wonders if there is anything out in space. This suggests to the audience that the film is sci-fi as well as thriller.

The first shot we see is of the tectonic plates, with a portal to another dimension. The voice over tell us about the backstory to the film. The audience becomes curious to find what is on the other side of the portal or what might come out of it, this creates tension.

The second shot we see, we get a good view of the “KAIJU” or giant beast, and this shocks the audience because of the scale of the beast. The shot is an extreme long shot. The beast easily destroys the golden gate bridge, which makes the audience realise the sheer size of it.

A lot of the shots are extreme long shots, these shots range from high angles and low angles. The low angle shots mainly show people in fear running from the beasts, but the high angle shots show fallen/dead beast, giant foot prints.

The editing is mainly straight cuts, but when the voice over is talking about how the countries came together, news headlines and government letters in black and white scroll from all the sides of the screen with a transparent background to still show the world leaders.

This creates tension and hope for audience because the people are fighting back but will they win?

Snatch opening titles:

Close up to a diamond in a poor environment, this could suggest that this is their lucky day and the will do anything to keep or make a profit off of it.

Cartoony image of each character, which was similar to a wanted poster, this suggests that the characters in this film are all “crooks”. The typography looks western themed.

All of the shots use graphic matches, to show each character, this makes the transition nice and smooth. But all of the matches are related to crimes.

The costume of the character “micky” suggests he is a traveller or gypsy, because he doesn’t wear the most expensive of clothes but he still manages to look smart.

Films that have good opening sequences:

Alien

Terminator

Snatch

Orphanage
