Pacific Rim Opening Scene
The opening scene starts with a piece of text, its typography and
colour suggest that it is an old-fashion computer. Then a voice over starts,
the voice is a male begins to talk about the stars and he wonders if there is anything
out in space. This suggests to the audience that the film is sci-fi as well as
thriller.
The first shot we see is of the tectonic plates, with a portal to
another dimension. The voice over tell us about the backstory to the film. The
audience becomes curious to find what is on the other side of the portal or
what might come out of it, this creates tension.
The second shot we see, we get a good view of the “KAIJU” or giant
beast, and this shocks the audience because of the scale of the beast. The shot
is an extreme long shot. The beast easily destroys the golden gate bridge,
which makes the audience realise the sheer size of it.
A lot of the shots are extreme long shots, these shots range from
high angles and low angles. The low angle shots mainly show people in fear
running from the beasts, but the high angle shots show fallen/dead beast, giant
foot prints.
The editing is mainly straight cuts, but when the voice over is
talking about how the countries came together, news headlines and government letters
in black and white scroll from all the sides of the screen with a transparent
background to still show the world leaders.
This creates tension and hope for audience because the people are
fighting back but will they win?
Snatch opening titles:
Close up to a diamond in a poor
environment, this could suggest that this is their lucky day and the will do
anything to keep or make a profit off of it.
Cartoony image of each character,
which was similar to a wanted poster, this suggests that the characters in this
film are all “crooks”. The typography looks western themed.
All of the shots use graphic
matches, to show each character, this makes the transition nice and smooth. But
all of the matches are related to crimes.
The costume of the character
“micky” suggests he is a traveller or gypsy, because he doesn’t wear the most expensive
of clothes but he still manages to look smart.
