MeS thriller analysis of Snatch

The first shot is of the actors in the back of a van, changing clothes, this signifies that identity is important throughout this thriller, because it seems like they are tiring to conceal their identity and this suggest that it is a secretive or criminal film. All of them are wearing the same clothes, white shirts and the suits this shows the audience that they do work together. it also makes audience wonder what they do.

This shot starts the titles of the film. ‘Snatch’ is shown laid of a shot of a diamond suggesting that this film is to do with money, robbery or crime of some kind. The use of sans serif text for all of the typography that the opening sequence shows that it isn't a formal film. It has a western style to the typography this implies that they could be "crooks" like a wanted poster from the western genre. They are in suits, showing people that they are of a high status, but this could be misleading and their character may be very different.

Sound

Sound track is non-diegetic. The diegetic sound fits the soundtrack, for example the loading of a gun and the slamming of the boot fits into when another beat happens.

Lighting

The lighting is very dark and shadowy signifying that they are hiding something and not the full story will be told. Some parts of the opening is slowed down focusing on key props that the audience need to watch out for, for example, weapons and how they are used, money, and again it being hidden showing how secretive they’re being.

This shot is from another part of the film but it really represents how lighting effects the scene.

The background is much lighter than foreground, this could connote that once you get past these man you will be safe. They come across similarly to an antagonist. During the opening titles they use different filters and lighting effects to make the shot look old or grainy. This is stereotypical of the thriller genre because the lighting creates a sense of mystery.

Props

A prop that is key is, money, this prop is visible many times and show the audience that the film relates around money, it also shows the types of business that the characters do to make their money to do more deals. Editing is used here for slow motion to make sure the audience know that money is important and will keep appearing throughout the film.

> The different props in the opening titles give the audience an idea about the plot.
> The bags of money and items being swapped between the characters, using a graphic match, represents or implies that the film is about crime and dodgy deals.

Use of colours

The key colours used in the opening are greys, blacks, browns and a few whites. This gives a feeling of mystery and grudge or grime. They use the light to make the diamond shine, so that the audience sees it and realizes that it is key to the plot.

Setting

The setting is very stereotypical of a crime-thriller. I starts off in a bank, then after the bank heist they end up in a van and then it reactions between different places that look run down or poverty stricken. It seems like they are trying to get out of poverty. This is typical of the thriller genre.
